Hardcore Jonas Brothers fans might know they headlined the Carnival for a Cure fundraiser today, Sunday, in New York City on behalf of the Diabetes Research Institute. What even hardcore fans may not know, but what Nick Jonas announced today, is the news that Nick himself has type 1 diabetes. As the show began, every diabetic was asked to raise his or her hand, and Nick surprised everyone by raising his (see pic above).
Don’t panic, fans—diabetes is a metabolic disorder that demands controlling blood-sugar levels, but it’s manageable. He was diagnosed in November 2005 after being thirsty all the time, losing weight and acting moody. When he found out he had it, he panicked. “I had an emotional breakdown since I really had no idea what diabetes was all about. I wondered, ‘Why me?’ Then I asked myself, ‘Why not me?’ and realized that I might be able to help other kids with diabetes.”
Nick is not in pain and his diabetes will not affect his career. Nick keeps his blood sugar in check with a new insulin-delivery device that looks kinda like an MP3 player called the OmniPod Insulin Management System (by Insulet Corporation). It’s attached to his body (which we saw at our photo shoot a couple of weeks back) and he’s feeling as good as he looks.
“At first, I was worried that diabetes would keep me from performing and recording and doing everything a teenager likes to do, but, my career is really ramping up,” Nick said. “I want to let kids know that it doesn’t have to be so hard. The most important thing is to never ever let yourself get down about having diabetes, because you can live a really great life as a kid with diabetes.”
His goal in announcing his status is to raise awareness for the disease, which affects about 20 million Americans.
