“If the Jonas Brothers‘ first moment on the cover of Rolling Stone found them reaching the height of teen pop stardom, their latest — on stands this week — finds them pushing for an even loftier goal: musical credibility. (Click above for exclusive footage from their new RS cover shoot.)

“I think we are working to make that trade without having to give anything up,” Kevin Jonas tells Rolling Stone in our cover story. (Check out photos from their Rolling Stone cover shoot here.) “But I think it will take time, because of where we came from. I would honestly say to anybody, if you were in a band like us, you would take advantage of those platforms too. It’s easy for people to say, ‘No, I’m a real rock & roller,’ but I think you do what you’ve got to do.”

Our Jenny Eliscu spent time with the brothers in Los Angeles as they prepared to hit the road in support of their most ambitious album yet, Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The album, the tour and much of what the band does these days seems designed to help facilitate the leap from teen pop to contemporary rock. It’s a challenging feat that few have pulled off. (Check out our look at artists who managed to outgrow their pop roots.) But the brothers are working hard on what they know will be a long, slow march to credibility. Eliscu found Nick on point as the band’s creative lead, putting their touring band through their paces (his brothers have started calling him “Mr. President”), while Kevin helps to steer the Jonas business and image (he even built a foam 3-D scale model of the band’s new stage set, which now takes 180 people to assemble at each show).

“We have an operation around us that we run,” Kevin tells Rolling Stone. “It’s not run for us, or dictated to us. Everything that we do, we sign off on.”

But even with a strong operation and a lot of hard work, the band knows that teen idols rarely make the leap to “serious artist.” “Personally, I’m not in the band to say, ‘Hey, you need to respect us, take us seriously,’ because that’s kind of stupid,” Joe tells RS. “We’re doing it because we love it, and we don’t care what age group we attract. If they like our music, they like our music, and if they don’t, fine. We don’t need you like our music.”

“The Jonas Brothers kicked off their massive world tour this past weekend in front of an audience 50,000 strong at Dallas’ new Cowboys Stadium. The band’s set featured a brand-new three-octagon stage and more than 100 minutes of music culled from their new album Lines, Vines and Trying Times as well as older material, but it wasn’t until the encore that fans got the biggest surprise of the evening: Miley Cyrus, who’s reportedly once again dating Nick Jonas, hit the stage and sang with Nick for their Lines’ duet “Before The Storm,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

Rumors of Miley attending the show began circulating when Cyrus Twittered “In one of my favorite cities with my favorite people. Guess where I am and what I’m doing. I will never tell” earlier that evening. The Jonas Brothers were also joined onstage by opening act Jordin Sparks, who performed her new hit single “Battlefield” with the band. The set list also included A Little Bit Longer’s “Lovebug, “SOS” and a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.”

“Putting this show together is so much different than anything we’ve ever done before,” Nick recently told Rolling Stone when we hung out with the Brothers in the days before the performance. “We tried to add some musicians, some horn players and some string players, just to fill in the space, and fill in the sound as well.” The trio also boast that the entire audience is only 30 to 90 feet away from the performers at all times, making the concert more intimate for the fans.”

Before our very eyes Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas have morphed into larger-than-life concert headliners. That was evident during the Westlake-based trio’s show Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium. The gig opened the sibling act’s 2009 world tour and cemented them as big ticket superstars.

Before a crowd of about 50,000, the Jonas Brothers offered up roughly 100 minutes of songs from three albums, including the just-released “Lines, Vines and Trying Times.”

The stage, three octagons stationed smack in the middle of the stadium floor, provided plenty of room for spectacle, from a cool feature that showered ribbons of water shaped as hearts, letters and strings to a crane that extended Kevin and Joe over the audience.

But perhaps the grandest piece of eye-popping scenery was the surprise appearance of teen queen Miley Cyrus during an encore performance of “Before the Storm” with ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas. Everybody went nuts when she emerged to sing the power ballad.

Another memorable moment came when opening act Jordin Sparks of American Idol fame returned to the stage to sing “Battlefield,” her new single, with a little help from the JoBros.

Otherwise this shindig belonged to the boys, who were always in control of the proceedings. Kevin and Nick are the multi-instrumentalists of the group. They took to guitars, piano and drums. Joe is the entertainer, the one who made sure to corner the microphone at every turn.

With all three of them, you get an ever-growing array of musical styles. Sure, the gist of the trio is power pop, a radio-friendly mixture of hooks, soaring choruses and total feel-good vibes. For that we rejoiced in “BB Good,” “Play My Music,” “SOS” and “That’s Just the Way We Roll.”

But for a little variety, the whimsical, folky number “Lovebug” deserves mention, as does the soulful “Much Better” and “Gotta Find You,” which was all acoustic guitars, violins and quiet charm.

A couple of others to note: A lively cover of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” and Nick’s piano-fortified anthem, “A Little Bit Longer.”

Sparks could have easily been onstage a little longer. She was impressive, what with her strong pipes and earthy, spunky demeanor. She came off genuine singing her signature tunes “Tattoo,” “No Air” and during the effervescent “Young and in Love.”

New York City band Honor Society, who had the plum slot of first performers on this trek, were plenty fun doing four songs in the popular, fast-paced, catchy-crunchy sound of the day.

Please note: I made a post a while back letting everyone know about meet & greet info for the Jonas Brothers upcoming tour and their seems to be some confusion with that. JonasBrothersCentral.com is NOT currently giving away any meet & greet passes. That post was to inform everyone that the Jonas Brothers official fan club http://jonasbrothersfanclub.com is giving away passes to some of the fan club members. I wish I had passes to give away to some of my amazing visitors but I just don’t have the resources to make that happen. Thanks for understanding.
